• Waste-to-energy treatment of new waste streams: characterization and impacts

    The European framework program Horizon 2020 calls to act with a view to sustainable growth, promoting a greener and more competitive economy to make more effective use of resources. The use of wastes difficult to be mechanically recycled as alternative fuels in different industries in a safe way presents the advantage of recovering the energy contained in those residues; in addition, it reduces greenhouse emissions when replacing fossil fuels by materials that would had been mainly landfilled otherwise. In recent years, Waste-to-Energy processes are seriously considered as an alternative to treat some challenging wastes raising in our society that present difficulty of management, but there is still a lack of information considering the specific characteristics of these wastes. An overview of the research currently conducted by our group regarding the thermal treatment of new problematic wastes under study will be presented. These wastes are bulky wastes (mattresses, furniture, automotive shredder residue (ASR) and marine debris) and electronic wastes (e-waste).
